Home fixes you can do
Tick each skill once you can do it without the guide.
- Find, test and tag my water shutoffs, fixture and main
- Reset a tripped breaker safely and label the panel
- Clear a slow drain with a plastic snake and a plunger, no chemicals
- Keep a flange plunger and know the push and pull technique
- Stop a running toilet: lower the float or swap the flapper
- Use a cordless drill: bit, direction, clutch and a slow start
- Find a stud with baseboard nails, spacing, tapping and a test nail
- Weigh it, then hang heavy things from two studs or rated toggles
- Fill and touch up nail holes before moving out
- Paint a room: prep, tape, cut in, roll two thin coats
- Build flat-pack in order and anchor every tall piece
- Save the gas emergency number and know to leave first
- Before a hard freeze: heat on, cabinets open, a thin stream, hoses off
- Empty the lint trap every load and clean the vent yearly
- Keep one small toolbox with the basics in a known spot
- Find drafts with paper, then weatherstrip the stop and add a sweep
- Check the furnace filter monthly and change it with the arrow right
- Press test and reset on every GFCI outlet monthly
