How to find a mentor or sponsor
A mentor gives you advice; a sponsor uses their influence to put your name forward for projects and promotions. Find a mentor by asking someone a step or two ahead for one specific conversation, not a lifelong commitment. Earn a sponsor by doing visible, excellent work for a senior person and telling them clearly what you want next.
Why it matters: A mentor advises you; a sponsor puts your name forward, and both matter.
Steps
- Write down what you want help with: a skill, a move or a decision.
- List three people a step or two ahead who have done it.
- Ask one for a short, specific conversation: could I ask you three questions about moving into product roles?
- Come prepared, respect the time, and send thanks with what you will try.
- Follow up in a month with what happened; that is how a mentoring relationship grows.
- For sponsorship, volunteer for visible work with a senior leader and deliver it well.
- Tell that leader clearly what role or project you want next.
Common mistakes
- Asking a near stranger: will you be my mentor?
- Expecting a sponsor to guess your ambitions.
- Only seeking mentors who are exactly like you.
