Steps

  1. Have the tires, fluids, battery and brakes checked a week before you go.
  2. Map legs of a few hours with planned stops for fuel, food and stretching.
  3. Book the first night's stay and aim to arrive in daylight.
  4. Share the route, stays and check-in times with a friend, and share your location during the drive.
  5. Download offline maps and save roadside assistance and emergency numbers.
  6. Pack the car emergency kit, water, snacks, a phone charger and a flashlight.
  7. Keep the tank above a quarter and pull over somewhere safe whenever you feel drowsy.
