How to build a snack board
Build a snack board by starting with two or three anchors, such as cheeses or hummus, then adding something crunchy like crackers or breadsticks, something fresh like grapes, cucumber or apple slices, something salty like olives or nuts, and a small sweet bite. Group each item in small piles, fill the gaps, and set out knives and napkins. Plan about two to three ounces of cheese per person.
Why it matters: It is the fastest hosting win, and it needs no cooking.
Steps
- Choose a board, tray or large plate.
- Place two or three anchors first: cheeses of different textures or a bowl of dip.
- Add something crunchy: crackers, breadsticks or toasted bread.
- Add something fresh: grapes, berries, apple slices, cucumber or peppers.
- Add something salty: olives, nuts or pickles, in small bowls if wet.
- Add a small sweet bite: dried fruit, chocolate or honey.
- Fill the gaps, add a knife for each cheese and put napkins beside it.
- Label nuts and anything with common allergens for guests.
Common mistakes
- Putting wet items straight on the board so crackers go soft.
- Using only one knife for every cheese.
- Leaving it out for hours on a hot day.
