Steps

  1. Download the last three months of statements for every checking and savings account.
  2. Search each statement for fee, charge, service and penalty, and list every hit with its amount.
  3. Open your account's fee schedule on the bank's site and match each fee to its rule.
  4. Turn off overdraft coverage for card purchases if you would rather have a purchase declined than pay a fee.
  5. Switch to paper-free statements and use in-network ATMs.
  6. Ask the bank, politely, to refund a recent fee; many will do it once.
  7. If fees remain, compare two or three no-fee accounts and move your direct deposit.
