Steps

  1. Notice the yes forming and take a breath before answering.
  2. Ask yourself: if this were next Tuesday, would I still want to do it?
  3. Use a warm opener: thank you for thinking of me.
  4. Give the no plainly: but I cannot take that on this year.
  5. Skip the list of reasons; one short reason at most.
  6. Sit with the pause afterward instead of filling it with apology.
  7. Notice what you now have time for, and remind yourself the next time.
